When to Use Natural Remedies

Any of these natural remedies for Acne may work for you, and some may not. This will all depend on your body chemistry and the cause of your Acne.

Many medical acne remedies are very expensive and not much more effective than natural remedies, so the choice is up to you.

One thing to consider is that acne is a symptom of something else. Until you take care of the underlying cause, acne will continue to show up.

List of Natural Remedies that Treat this Condition

(Clicking on the underlined name of the remedy below will take you the page that tells you specifically how to use it for this condition. It will open a new window.)

  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Zinc

Symptoms

Symptoms of acne can include small whitehead pimples, blackheads, or large red inflamed pimples (which can cause scarring).

About 96% of adolescents get acne in one form or another and it can continue into adulthood. Some women get acne every month a few days before their menstrual cycle.

Causes

A pimple is formed when the sebaceous glands in your hair follicles produce too much sebum (the oil that keeps your skin supple) either because the follicle becomes clogged or the glands become swollen (or both).

The oil gets stuck in the follicle along with dead skin cells and the bacteria in there start to multiply and create toxins causing the area to become infected and swell up becoming a pimple.

This is something that happens when your hormones become imbalanced as they do at puberty, pregnancy, menopause, or during a woman's menstrual cycle.

It also happens when your skin, one of the largest detoxifying organs in your body, has to work too hard to get rid of the toxins you may have built up in your system from eating junk food or drinking sodas and other sugary drinks.

This can happen if your GI tract doesn't work as well as it should because of a lack of proper nutrition or water.

Nutritional and Dietary Support

In addition to any of the remedies above, good nutrition plays a big role in natural remedies for acne.

Because part of what causes acne is a build up of toxins in the body, keeping your diet free of foods that your body can't use nutritionally, like junk food, processed foods, sugars and trans fat foods will go a long way toward keeping your skin clear.

Making sure you are getting enough fiber every day (25-30 grams) so that your bowel movements are regular (2 to 3 a day) will help keep your GI tract working well and should help clear up your acne also.

Another important part of nutritional support that will help your body's ability to cleanse itself is the use of probiotics. These are the beneficial bacteria that you have in your body that helps keep your system free of toxins.

Please see our probiotics page for further information on the best way to supplement your diet with these healthy bacteria.

Additional Actions You Can Take

In addition to any of the natural remedies for acne above, you should keep your skin clean by washing gently with a mild soap twice a day.

This helps keep the pores clear so that less blockage of the sebaceous glands occur.

Ladies: wearing make-up that is known not to clog pores is also beneficial, or you can go without make-up if you are comfortable with that.
